Designing Vinyl Letters Properly
As with any graphic sign, good design methods are an important aspect that will directly relate to the overall success of any intended message. This applies to vinyl lettering, especially when it comes to the overall size and contrast of your intended message. Size of the letters should be taken into consideration by determining how far away the reader may be when viewing the sign. If the letters are placed on a store window to reflect a business name or message and the reader could be passing by in a car, the letters should be a large as possible and the message should be as concise as possible. If the window message is store hours and is intended for visitors that walk to the front of the business, the lettering can be smaller. Contrast for letters should be opposite of any background colors that may exist inside the store. If the store is dark and the readers could pass by at night for example, the lettering should be as bright colored as they can be.
Boat, Car & Truck Lettering
Car and truck lettering, as well as boat names should be large enough so that the reader can view and read the message or name from a distance that is acceptable to the designer. Contrast for the lettering should be opposite from the background colors and outdoor lettering should be a high gloss vinyl where indoor lettering should be low gloss or flat colored vinyl..
Fonts can be stylish and even fancy at times, but should be easily readable. The more stylish a font is, the larger the letters should be. Monograms for example are very stylish and are usually as large as possible for the intended area.
Boat numbers are a necessary requirement for boat registrations, but are not intended to be stylish like a boat name. However, boat numbers must be at least 3 inches in height based on federal regulations.
