Cast Vinyl Opposed To Calendared Vinyl
The biggest difference between cheap vinyl lettering and a quality letters is the vinyl material that is used. A cheaper company will use 3 mil calendared vinyl where we use 2 mil cast vinyl. The differences between calendar vinyl and cast vinyl is primarily the durability and life expectancy along with the ease of installation cast vinyl will provide to various surfaces opposed to the more difficult calendared vinyl.
Cast vinyl is considered a high performance vinyl because it is also better on curves, glossier and more conformable to un even surfaces. This type of vinyl will also not shrink like calendared vinyl and will fade less over time.
The three major companies that manufacture cast vinyl include oracal, Avery and 3M. We have found that the oracal vinyl is has the better life expectancy rating of 9 years and, in our opinion, is the preferred brand on the market today. so we use oracal vinyl when producing vinyl lettering for our customers.
Vinyl Lettering Differences
Other differences that should be taken into consideration when picking the right vinyl material is the glare conditions. Vinyl wall words that would be exposed to indoor light would lend itself to a less glossy vinyl opposed to a high gloss type. Whereas, boat lettering or vehicle letters would require more of a high gloss vinyl. As with any sign, contrast between the color of the sign and the background color are other variables that need to be taken into consideration.
